Fifty years ago, the family-owned business known as Thompson Pharmacy began in Altoona. Today, Thompson Pharmacy employs 150 employees and owns five retail pharmacies in Blair and Centre Counties. Thompson Pharmacy also operates a Long Term Care Pharmacy that services approximately 4000 beds in Long-Term Care facilities in 6 counties.

The family business was started by Bill Thompson, III’s father, Bill Thompson, Jr. All three of the Thompson children worked in the family business throughout their school years. When Bill III graduated from University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy in 1988, he returned to the family business and soon assumed the position of Vice President of the company.

In 2005, Bill III became President of Thompson Pharmacy. Bill Jr. transferred to the position of Chairman of the Board where he remains active in the daily working of the company to this day.

In 2005 Thompson Pharmacy was inducted into the Blair County Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame for outstanding businesses in Blair County.

Thompson Pharmacy was voted Favorite Hometown Pharmacy by the people of the area in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Bill III’s father Bill Jr. was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award by University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy in 2004 and in 2014 Bill Jr. was presented with the Blair County Chamber Lifetime Achievement Award for Business Excellence – the highest award granted by the Chamber.

Bill III is active in the community and serves on the Regional Value Drug Board, ALSM board of Directors and actively provides donations and sponsorships to various local schools, charities and arts foundations.

Bill III and his lovely wife Dana (Mignogna) have been married since 1988 and have two sons, Bill IV and AJ. Dana graduated from IUP with a Mathematics degree and was employed for several years by Altoona and Hollidaysburg school districts. Dana has since become the manager of Thompson Pharmacy’s exclusive Gift Galleries. Bill and Dana’s oldest son, Bill IV is in his first year at University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy and their youngest son AJ is in 8th grade at Altoona Area Jr. High.

As the owner of one of the last independent pharmacies left in the area, Bill Thompson, III continually strives to provide his customers with the best service possible. The Thompsons have spent over 50 years serving their community with compassion and dedication.
